Who we are

Shakespeare in Detroit (SiD) has been a leader in the city’s cultural landscape for over a decade, pioneering Detroit’s first-ever Shakespeare in the park experience in 2013. Today, it stands as the city’s premier classical theater, with high-quality professional productions at the core of its work.

Rather than adhering to traditional seasonal structures, SiD has, since the pandemic, shifted its focus to curating productions that reflect the needs of our modern world, meet audience expectations, and create meaningful social impact—while maintaining the highest artistic standards. This approach ensures that every production is intentional, resonant, and deeply connected to the communities it serves. In addition to its full-scale productions, SiD also presents special events, including staged readings and community engagements that further its mission to make classical theater accessible to all.

Beyond the stage, SiD is committed to education through Shakespeare STEAM and its Summer Conservatory:

  • Shakespeare STEAM – Launched in 2019, this in-classroom program integrates the Science of Lighting, the Technology of Sound Design, the Art of classical performance, and the Mathematics of set building. SiD Teaching Artists work alongside educators, providing students with hands-on training in both the artistic and technical aspects of theater.

  • Summer Conservatory – An extension of Shakespeare STEAM, this five-to-six-week intensive is open to all teens interested in deepening their knowledge of acting, technical theater, or production. Participants train directly with SiD’s professional artists and technicians, gaining industry experience and a scholarship upon completion.

SiD’s impact has been recognized by Forbes, HOUR Detroit, the National Endowment for the Arts, and numerous other media outlets.

Founder Sam White is an award-winning, critically acclaimed international director, entrepreneur, and activist with a proven track record of creating measurable artistic and educational impact.
